5 essential car maintenance tips for Trinidad & Tobago drivers

Simple habits that help reduce breakdowns and keep your vehicle in better shape.

Good vehicle care does not need to be complicated or time-consuming. A short, consistent routine, a few minutes each week and a proper service on schedule, catches most common problems well before they become expensive or unsafe. Here are the habits that matter most.

Check tyres often

Tyres affect braking, handling and fuel efficiency, and they wear unevenly if alignment or pressure is off. Check pressure at least monthly and always before a long trip, since underinflated tyres wear faster and handle worse in the rain. Look for uneven wear patterns, cracks in the sidewall, or damage after driving over rough or flooded roads, all early warnings that a tyre needs attention.

Pay attention to fluids

Engine oil, coolant, brake fluid and washer fluid should all be checked on a regular basis, not just when a warning light appears. Low or discoloured oil can signal a developing engine problem, while low brake fluid should always be treated as urgent rather than routine. A five-minute check under the bonnet every few weeks catches most fluid issues before they become expensive.

Do not ignore small signs

New sounds, dashboard warning lights, vibrations or leaks are the vehicle's way of flagging a problem early, while it is still small. It is tempting to wait and see, especially if the vehicle still drives normally, but small symptoms often become larger repair bills, or safety issues, if left unaddressed. A quick inspection when something feels off is almost always worth the trip.

Keep on top of scheduled servicing

Sticking to the manufacturer's recommended service intervals, rather than stretching them to save money in the short term, is one of the most reliable ways to avoid larger repairs later. Servicing covers items that are easy to miss in a casual check, such as timing components, filters and wear items that fail gradually rather than suddenly. A vehicle serviced on schedule is also easier to sell and easier to insure with confidence.

Look after the basics that get forgotten

Batteries, wiper blades and lights are easy to forget until the moment they fail, usually at an inconvenient time. Test all lights, including indicators and brake lights, every few weeks, and replace wiper blades at the first sign of streaking rather than waiting for the rainy season to reveal the problem. A battery nearing the end of its life often gives warning signs, such as slow starts or dimming lights, worth acting on early.

Quick checklist

  • Inspect tyres weekly, including pressure and tread
  • Check oil, coolant and brake fluid regularly
  • Investigate new sounds, lights or vibrations promptly
  • Follow the manufacturer's service schedule
  • Test all lights and indicators periodically
  • Replace wiper blades before the rainy season, not during it
  • Watch for early signs of battery wear
